Jeff garvin author6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() “And as I started to get to know Riley – not as a boy character or a girl character, but as a person – I thought: ‘This is the idea. “So I sat down to write and the first thing that came out was Riley’s blog post: ‘The first thing you’re going to want to know about me is: Am I a boy, or am I a girl?’” Garvin says. ![]() The conversation stuck with him, and when he woke the next morning, Garvin says, he was still thinking about what that transgender teen’s life must be like. ![]() “And the next words out of her mouth were, ‘Isn’t that gross?’ I started to argue, and it ended in uncomfortable silence.” “I thought, ‘Oh, awesome, we’re about to have this conversation about love and acceptance,’” he says. “The driver brought up this court case that was pending, this transgender student was suing the school district for the right to use the locker room,” says Garvin, who grew up in Brea and graduated from Chapman University in Orange. For Jeff Garvin, the seed that blossomed into his debut novel, “Symptoms of Being Human,” was sown a little over two years ago while riding in a car with a disparate group of friends. ![]()
