It became the third-greatest traded product from the New World after gold and silver.” When the Spanish invaded the Aztec Empire, they discovered this valuable export, protecting “their exclusive supply by disguising the red dye’s origins in mystery, spreading the story that the cochineal was a pea-like vegetable. Carmine was used in the Americas for dyeing textiles as early as 700 BCE: “One of the reddest dyes that the natural world has ever produced, the crimson dye is carminic acid which is produced by the female cochineal to deter other insect predators.” It’s a laborious process yet for thousands of years mankind has gone to considerable trouble to produce dyes, inks and paints.Ĭolour is fundamental to our experience of the world – so fundamental that throughout history, health and lives were risked for the sake of treasured pigments. About 14,000 insects are needed to make just 100 grams of cochineal dye according to Chromatopia, David Coles’s illustrated history of colour. ![]() ![]() Also known as E120, its presence in the red of Skittles sweets was an issue for vegans and vegetarians until it was finally removed in recent years. As any self-respecting vegan knows, carmine food colouring comes from the cochineal insect. ![]()

John muir first summer in the sierra6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() "Yosemite Valley was the ultimate pilgrimage site for Victorian Americans," Gisel said. Leading me through the forest was Bonnie Gisel, curator of the Sierra Club's LeConte Memorial Lodge and the author of several books on Muir. No wonder many 19th-century travelers who visited Yosemite saw it as a new Eden. And every turn offered picture-postcard views of the valley's soaring granite cliffs, so majestic that early visitors compared them to the walls of Gothic cathedrals. ![]() The crisp summer morning that I was guided to the site, the mountain air was perfumed with ponderosa and cedar jays, larks and ground squirrels gamboled about. Maybe that's not such a bad thing, for here one can experience the Yosemite that inspired Muir. But only park historians and a few Muir devotees even know where the little log cabin was, just yards from the Yosemite Falls Trail. ![]() ![]() The naturalist John Muir is so closely associated with Yosemite National Park-after all, he helped draw up its proposed boundaries in 1889, wrote the magazine articles that led to its creation in 1890 and co-founded the Sierra Club in 1892 to protect it-that you'd think his first shelter there would be well marked. ![]() Open Me Carefully by Emily Dickinson6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() Publisher's Note on the ONEWhy Susie!Early Writings, 1850 to mid-1850s.1SECTION TWOSue, Dear Sue, Sweet Sue, SisterEarly Middle Writings, mid-1850s to mid-1860s.61SECTION THREEThe Incidents of LoveLate Middle Writings, mid-1860s to mid-1870s.145SECTION FOURTo Be Susan Is ImaginationLate Writings, mid-1870s to May 1886.201Coda.265Key to Materials.269Notes.271Acknowledgments.297Bibliography.299Index of First Lines.305Index of Names and Subjects. ![]() EMILY DICKINSON'S INTIMATE LETTERS TO SUSAN HUNTINGTON DICKISONĮdited by ELLEN LOUISE HART and MARTHA NELL SMITHĬopyright © 1998 Ellen Louise Hart and Martha Nell Smith. ![]() Jeff garvin author6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() “And as I started to get to know Riley – not as a boy character or a girl character, but as a person – I thought: ‘This is the idea. “So I sat down to write and the first thing that came out was Riley’s blog post: ‘The first thing you’re going to want to know about me is: Am I a boy, or am I a girl?’” Garvin says. ![]() The conversation stuck with him, and when he woke the next morning, Garvin says, he was still thinking about what that transgender teen’s life must be like. ![]() “And the next words out of her mouth were, ‘Isn’t that gross?’ I started to argue, and it ended in uncomfortable silence.” “I thought, ‘Oh, awesome, we’re about to have this conversation about love and acceptance,’” he says. “The driver brought up this court case that was pending, this transgender student was suing the school district for the right to use the locker room,” says Garvin, who grew up in Brea and graduated from Chapman University in Orange. However, Blake works wonders with Queens of Fennbirn, focusing not only on the histories of our three queens but also on the histories of the secondary characters. Often with novellas, authors fail to inject the same level of imagination and detail as is evident in the main novels, simply because they aren’t necessarily deemed ‘vital’ to the plot and can, therefore, be given less attention. ![]() ![]() I have to say that I was really impressed with this collection Kendare Blake absolutely delivered with her amazing writing, yet again!
